It’s finally December and the cold weather Gods have taken note! With a noticeable drop in temperature, it’s becoming more difficult to do anything but curl up on the couch with a big bowl of popcorn, hot chocolate, and holiday Hallmark movies on repeat (or is that just me…?). Whatever your indoor activity of choice may be, there’s one thing that’s certain: you want to be comfortable, cozy, and warm.
So what better an option than bringing Hygge into your home? Hygge, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is “A quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture)”. In other words, a Danish word derived from the culture meaning a comfy-cozy-happy-snuggly-blissful-content feeling.
There are a few cheap items as well as things you can do to bring Hygge into your home, but it starts with your affordable and stress-free living. Part of Hygge is “feelings of contentment”, and if your living arrangement is less than ideal, then it’s time you check out Bedly.
Bedly takes the hassle out of leasing an apartment by doing the legwork for you! An amazing option for a variety of people, including students, creatives, travelers, and young professionals, Bedly offers affordable short-term housing with no credit checks, no broker fees, fully furnished units, and several different roommates (or no roommate) options depending on your status (looking to live with a partner? A friend? Or meet a new roommate?). All in all, leasing from Bedly will truly save your living experience, plus, you’ll be well on your way to welcoming Hygge into your new apartment!
Create a Hygge Nook. Trying to save money on the heating bill by maintaining lower temps inside? Or maybe your building is “heat controlled” (NYC Residential Building Owners are legally required to provide heat and hot water to tenants. Sounds great, right? Not having control over the thermostat can be really inconvenient come February when the heat has been on all winter and then the building decides to save some money and turns it down). Whatever your situation, a cozy blanket is an absolute necessity, especially when creating a Hygge nook. To start, grab your coziest blanket or purchase a new one (this one at Target is $25).
Comfy socks or slippers are a must in your nook, too! Have a friend who knits? You won’t find anything better than a pair of socks knit personally for your taste, or check out Etsy for some beautiful hand-woven pairs.
You’ll want to pick out your favorite book(s) or book(s) you plan to read, along with a journal as well. Keep them in your nook and avoid screen time to feel truly blissed out. Add a plant (something small like a succulent is perfect), light a candle or two or hang some fairy lights, and voila! Your nook is complete.
Make warm drinks and bake some treats. There’s something so comforting about walking around in the cold weather with a warm beverage, coffee, hot chocolate, or hot cider. This is the feeling of Hygge and one that is easily obtainable inside as well. Grab your drink and curl up in your newly made nook. Maybe you even put a little Baileys in your hot cocoa – to each his own!
Baking is another satisfying feeling in the winter months. Whether it’s cake, muffins, or cookies, you can easily – well, as long as you stick to the recipe – and affordably bake some treats to share with friends or new roommates. Or eat them all while you watch the Hallmark channel. No? Just me again?
DIY Spa Night. Self-care is what Hygge is all about! Start with your bath to create the perfect spa night. Bath salts aren’t a necessity, but a definite plus. You can find some good ones at Lush! Throw on a face mask. Again, Lush has some great options, or you can make your own! Below is a simple at-home recipe from the girls at Tone It Up:
1/2 ripe avocado, peeled and pitted
1 tsp. plain yogurt
1 tsp. honey
- In a bowl, mix together all ingredients.
- Apply to your face and let sit for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with warm water and a washcloth.
Hygge, just like Bedly, is all about relieving stress and providing comfort in an affordable and simple way. So once you’ve moved into your new Bedly space, after you’ve prepped your apartment for winter and before you throw your holiday housewarming party, make sure to create some Hygge, whether it’s in the form of a nook, self-indulgent baking, or an evening of self-care.
